State Overview

The 2006 election cycle returned mixed results for the Democratic Party of New Mexico. The Party employed new programs, including a targeted email and various online programs that allowed broader grassroots support, while refining and expanding traditional field programs with training “boot camps” attended by activists across the state. With increased involvement among party activists, the 1st Congressional District, a top-tier target, was narrowly lost by 861 votes. However, the State Party was successful in re-electing Democrats to the State House and has maintained a close relationship with activists and donors to support another attempt at the targeted district.

In 2008 the focus is on redistricting. Democrats currently represent the majority in the State House and the State Senate and are in control of the Governor’s mansion. Failure to maintain the majority could negatively impact redistricting plans in 2010. With changes in the population and political landscape, adjustments in the next redistricting plan could give Democrats the ability to win at least one of the two Congressional seats currently head by Republicans Steve Pearce and Heather Wilson.
