Build for the Long Run
For far too long, Democratic state parties have functioned without the same level of support enjoyed by Republican state parties. By turning our focus on strenghtening infrastructure and funding in every state, we ensure that state and local Democratic organizing efforts continue year-round, to win at every level of government.
Grassroots Democrats is dedicated to strengthening the infrastructure and financial resources necessary to win by working with donors and every Democratic state party. Our main focus is on the areas of compliance, political outreach, fundraising and online strategy and communications, all of which will build a robust program that will win elections.
Why is this Important?
The consequences of not strenghtening state party infrastructure are more severe than simply not being as effective as we could be. Over the last decade, the Republican Party advantage on the ground has helped give them wins in states like Texas, where they took control of the state legislature for the first time since Reconstruction.
In an effort to bar Democrats from future wins, the new Republican majority in Texas, at the behest of U.S. House Majority leader Tom DeLay, forced a new redistricting plan (just two years after a bi-partisan plan had been implemented) into law that was specifically designed to increase Republican strength. They went so far as to misuse Homeland Security resources to force Democratic legislators to attend and provide the necessary quorum for the vote.
We must work to ensure that when the next round of redistricting happens in 2010, more states do not follow the Texas example. That can only happen if Democrats win seats in state legislatures and state houses.
